Carcassonne, Toulouse and Bayonne, France

Bastille Day –  la Fête nationale – le 14 juillet

We were lucky to be on July 14th in France. This day is a public holiday in France. It s celebrated by nationwide festivities including fireworks, parades and parties which we were able to enjoy on TV before heading out the see the Château Comtal de Carcassonne, ( Castèl de Carcassona). We didn’t know if there was an entrance fee but to our surprise their was none. We visited the Carcassone Cemetery (La Cite). The cemetery has very old graves beautifully shadowed by the castle. We headed towards the castle and walked the bridge the once protected the castle and its habitats. Once inside we were able to visit some shops and restaurants and try the crepes and the violet ice cream. The castle was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997. We drove thru Toulouse and arrived at Bayonne where we were staying for the night. We heard that the town center was having fireworks and we headed that way. We didn’t make it on time and by the time we turned back an ocean of people were heading back as well. It was late and all the places were closed; the only place open to eat was McDonalds; therefore, on the France Holiday we ate McDonalds. Now, what does this teach us; make sure you secure a place to eat prior to arriving at your destination. Make sure that if you will be arriving late, you first stop to eat and then continue your journey. Remember both the siesta times and the times they close or you will be eating at McDonalds in Europe.

Tuvimos la suerte de estar el 14 de julio en Francia. Este día es un día festivo en Francia. Se celebra con festividades a nivel nacional que incluyen fuegos artificiales, desfiles y fiestas que pudimos disfrutar en la televisión antes de salir a ver el Château Comtal de Carcassonne (Castèl de Carcassona). No sabíamos si había una tarifa de entrada, pero para nuestra sorpresa, no había ninguna. Visitamos el cementerio de Carcassone (La Cite). El cementerio tiene tumbas muy antiguas bellamente sombreadas por el castillo. Nos dirigimos hacia el castillo y caminamos por el puente que una vez protegió el castillo y sus hábitantes. Una vez dentro pudimos visitar algunas tiendas y restaurantes y probar los crepes y el helado de violeta. El castillo fue agregado a la lista de sitios del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO en 1997. Condujimos a través de Toulouse y llegamos a Bayona, donde nos quedamos la noche. Escuchamos que el centro de la ciudad estaba teniendo fuegos artificiales y nos dirigimos hacia allí. No logramos llegar a tiempo y para cuando regresamos, un océano de personas también regresaba. Era tarde y todos los lugares de comida estaban cerrados; el único lugar abierto para comer era McDonalds; por lo tanto, en las vacaciones de Francia comimos McDonalds. Ahora, ¿qué nos enseña esto? Asegúrese de encontrar un lugar para comer antes de llegar a su destino. Asegúrese de que si llega tarde, primero se detiene para comer y luego continúa su viaje. Recuerde tanto los horarios de la siesta como los horarios de cierre o comerá en McDonalds en Europa.
