Portugal: Nazare

On our second day in Portugal we drove from Port to Nazare. I had read that in Nazare they sometimes have the 100 foot waves; the only problem is that those waves are from October to December and here we are in July. Well, anyways, we wanted to see Portugal and the drive to Nazare was not bad at all. We stopped at the beach. The water was freezing. There was a festival and on the other side it was packed. Nazare was known as a fishing village and the tradition continues. Men wake up at 6AM and go out to the sea; the woman stay back and wait until they come back and sell the fish. The Phoenician people were the first fishermen from the region. We were lucky to see their boats and the fishes in the nets; the nets are pulled tightly around wooden frames and the fish are left under the midday sun to dry on the nets. The woman were dressed in their traditional clothes and we even saw some octopus that was laid out to dry. We drove down a little more and came across another beach that was pretty empty until we saw a bar where some British band was playing. It was the most fun we’ve had in a while. Dancing with total strangers; singing, laughing, drinking. It was a very cool time knowing that you don’t need to know the people to have a great time. We then headed to our hotel. The hotel we stayed at, Água d’Alma Hotel – Foz do Arelho – Lagoa de Óbidos, is a very cute, quaint place. We walked to the town, not many people out, and then back to the hotel. The weather was perfect. The place is beautiful and the people are friendly. We will try to visit Nazare again during the swell season. Can’t wait to see the surf.

En nuestro segundo día en Portugal, manejamos desde Porto a Nazaré. Había leído que en Nazare a veces tienen olas de 100 pies; El único problema es que esas olas son de octubre a diciembre y aquí estamos en julio. Bueno, de todos modos, queríamos ver a Portugal y el viaje a Nazare no estuvo nada mal. Nos detuvimos en la playa. El agua estaba helada. Habia un festival y al otro lado estaba lleno. Nazaré era conocido como un pueblo de pescadores y la tradición continúa. Los hombres se despiertan a las 6 de la mañana y salen al mar; la mujer se queda atrás y espera hasta que regresen y ellas venden el pescado. Los fenicios fueron los primeros pescadores de la región. Tuvimos la suerte de ver sus barcos y los peces en las redes; Las redes se colocan firmemente alrededor de los marcos de madera y los peces se dejan secar bajo el sol del mediodía. Las mujeres estaban vestida con sus ropas tradicionales e incluso vimos algunos pulpos que estaban puestos a secar. Condujimos un poco más y encontramos otra playa que estaba bastante vacía hasta que vimos un bar donde estaba tocando una banda británica. Fue lo más divertido que hemos tenido en mucho tiempo. Bailando con extraños; cantando, riendo, bebiendo. Fue un momento muy bueno saber que no necesitas conocer a las personas para pasar un buen rato. Luego nos dirigimos a nuestro hotel. El hotel en el que nos alojamos, Água d’Alma Hotel – Foz do Arelho – Lagoa de Óbidos, es un lugar muy lindo y pintoresco. Caminamos hacia el pueblo, no había mucha gente, y luego regresamos al hotel. El clima estaba perfecto. El lugar es hermoso y la gente es amigable. Intentaremos visitar Nazare nuevamente durante la temporada de oleaje. No puedo esperar ver las olas.
