Rent-A-Car, Diesel or Gas, Tolls and GPS

Cars, gas and tolls can be expensive, actually, they ARE expensive. Here are a few things I learned.

First: Rental Companies. Although not a bad idea to rent from the car rental agencies known in the US it is a good idea to also receive quotes from other car rentals where you are going. For example you might want to check with Sixt – they also have companies throughout the US and Europcar, which is a company found throughout Europe. 

Second: Diesel or Gas? Diesel is the cheapest alternative. Gas is expensive in Europe. We paid 1.56 euro per liter (there are 3.785 liters in a gallon) for gas and 1.36 euro per liter for diesel. The best choice for us was to rent a car that ran on diesel.  We rented both types and diesel was the cheapest alternative. 

Third: Tolls, tolls and more tolls. I would say that 15% of our cost was on tolls. If you travel to Spain you can purchase a transponder to pay for your tolls. Here is a link to purchase one. Some banks will allow you to only use it while you are there. Please check with the country you are visiting as they will have other options for you.

Fourth: GPS. I would recommend to rent a GPS from the same company where you are renting your car. They will offer you the GPS that comes with your car but the advantage of renting a separate GPS is that in most cases, in addition to GPS, these have Wi-Fi and Hot Spots. You should also check with your cell phone provider prior to your trip to compare prices since your smart phone already has a GPS. We paid 17 Euro per day for our GPS.

Carros, gasolina y peajes pueden ser caros, en realidad, SON caros. Aqui algunas cosas que aprendi.

Primero: Compañias que rentan carros. Aunque no es mala idea rentar de compañias  conocidas por nosotros aca en EU si es buena idea conseguir diferents precios de otras compañias de donde vas. Por ejemplo puedes chequear con Sixt, ellos tambien tienen compañias en el EU y Europcar que es una compañia que puedes encontrar por todo EU. 

Segundo: Diesel o Gasolina? Diesel es la alternative mas economica. Gasolina es bien cara en Europa. Nosotras pagamos 1.56 euro por litro (hay 3.785 litros en un galon) por gasoline y 1.36 euro para el diesel. La mejor alternativa para nosotras fue de alquilar un carro que corria en diesel. Rentamos de los dos y diesel fue la mejor alternativa.  

Tercero: Peajes, Peajes y mas Peajes. Diria que el 15% de nuestros gasto se fueron en peajes. Si viajas a España puedes comprar un transportador para pagar tus peajes. Abajo te puse un link donde puedes adquirirlo. Algunos bancos te van a dejar usarlos solo mientras estes. Por favor chequea con el pais donde vas a ir pues ellos pueden tener otras alternativas.

Cuarto: GPS. Te recomiendo que renten un GPS de la misma compañia donde rentan su auto. Ellos te ofreceran el GPS que esta integrado con el carro pero la ventaja de rentar un GPS no integrado es que estos vienen no solamente con el GPS tambien con Wi-Fi y Hot Spots. Debes de chequear con tu compañia de movil antes de tu viaje para comparar precios ya que tu cellular tiene GPS. Nosotras pagamos 17 euros al dia por el GPS.
